One week into our trip to South Africa, it seems clear that we have picked a poor time to visit. Winter time here means weather very like weather at home, and we have hardly seen the sky in the week. There is often a large amount of fog which prevents any real sight seeing. Anyway, we’re trying to make the most of it.Most of the time we have spent looking at various shops and indoor attractions here. We have seen most of the shopping centres and other local sights. We visited the Cape Town aqu...
So due to Ethiopia’s lack of internet, I’ll have to blog about my last days in Ethiopia from South Africa.Last Weekend, Brian and I and some of the girls left the city to spend an evening in the country. We went to a place called Debre Lebanos, where an Ethiopian man who lived in Germany for 30 years has built an attractive resort. It is built right on the edge of a large gorge, a tributary to the Nile. The views from the restaurant especially are stunning, which you can enjoy sitting in fro...

Unfortunately, the rain hasn’t come in time to prevent famine, which has hit some areas down country. With no rain until now, the crops have failed and the ...
So things are wrapping up here, I’ve finished all my end of year reports and grades. The students are looking forward to getting off; I am too to be honest. The power cuts continue to get worse, and now Bingham’s area of town is losing water on a regular basis too. Our house still seems to get it, maybe because we’re slightly lower in the city. But it is a real nuisance for those living at Bingham. Living without power is do-able, but water is more of a necessity! We’re really praying ha...
Coming from Ireland, I never thought I’d want rain to come. However, the lack of rain here over the past months has caused so many problems for this country, it is essential that it comes soon. The power cuts are very frequent now, though they are not predictable so annoyingly you cannot plan around them. It is quite frustrating, though perhaps more dangerous, to preserve power, they have turned off all street lights, including those on the Ring road. Which means that it is much harder to see ...
