So Brian’s Dad arrived on time and with all of his luggage which was a real answer to prayer. He did say that the trip was the worst of his life and that he won’t be doing another like that in his life. He flew from Chico Airport (his home town) -San Francisco-Toronto-Frankfurt-Vienna-Cairo-Addis. Literally halfway round the world to get to Ethiopia. Anyway, having got here, I think that he was glad to have come. We took quite a road trip with the bikes, heading down to Langano Lake. We set off on Tuesday morning and travelled back to Nazaret, where Brian and I stayed before. We stayed one night in the luxury room, and relaxed again by the pool in the sun.
On Wednesday, we set off again for Langano Lake, about a 2.5 hour journey down tarmac roads and then another 45 minutes along a rough gravel road. We were camping at the SIM compound that is located on the edge of the lake, and has beautiful views to wake up to, some of which are posted below.
We spent Thursday with Brian’s friends, the parents of students at Bingham. They have a beautiful little resort that they are building on the edge of the lake, opposite the SIM place. They have built a number of little African Toukles for the bar and accommodation areas, and a private beach to relax on. We spent the day, relaxing with BBQs and water-skiing which they do on the lake.
The next day we spent back at the SIM compound, being shown around the various facilities there by Laura, Brian’s girlfriend. They have a clinic for the local people there and a facility to care for malnourished babies. It’s very interesting seeing all of the work that is going on there. We were also able to take a walk into the local community and visit some of the locals in their mud huts. It was fascinating to see them all and experience a little bit of how they live. Brian’s father really enjoyed getting up close and personal with so many of the locals and made quite a few friends with the guards who patrol the SIM compound.
We headed back on Saturday morning, having had a really great trip.
School starts back tomorrow; everyone is back safely from all their Christmas vacations and getting ready to start back into a new term.
Happy New Year to all!
