So I have left crazy flooded Ireland and I’m back in Addis Ababa! Have been back nearly a week now and not much is different from the city I left 2 months ago. The power cuts have finished thankfully, though our water has been cut off for about a week now, due to pipe work. Our tanks are beginning to run out so hopefully we will have it restored soon. The Church next door to us seems to be in the middle of a festival so every night since I got here they have been blasting out horrible noise from 4am until about 9 or 10. Brian is still losing a lot of sleep because of their ignorance and countless complaints have fallen on deaf ears. He recently came up with a scheme for revenge, which I experienced early one morning. He went out with a megaphone that he had borrowed from the school and began shouting back at them, trying to show how annoying they are. I’m not sure if he had much success…
The farm has suffered some more casualties since I left. One of the rabbits died, as well as two of the chickens. The dog that Brian was looking after for the year, Bailey, had gotten sick just before I came and had stopped eating. Thankfully she has started eating again, but she is now just skin and bones. Brian is convinced she is depressed so is sending her down country to Langano to live with another family.
As regards to my work at Bingham this year, seemingly I will be doing some teaching. The younger grades were to be taught by the wife of one of the other teachers here, though she has two young children so will need someone to help take classes. Other than this, I’ll be helping sort out any IT issues in the school and general odd-jobs.
Brian seems glad that I’m back and has already hooked me up with a motorbike that he wants me to buy so that we can all go dirt biking at the weekends. Should make for some interesting adventures!
Hope all is well back home and that you aren’t flooded out!
Niall
