Half term is here now, so I’m just catching up on a missed blog last weekend. My last week passed by fairly easily, I had no Grade 8 classes as they were all away on a trip up to the North of Ethiopia. This meant that on Thursday I had no classes. Friday also was fairly relaxed.
Street ministry was enjoyable on Wednesday night; we took the street boys out for coffee to one of the local cafes near to where they hang out. We enjoyed chilling with them, showing them love that no-one else shows them. We bought some snacks as well, which the restaurant called pizzas, but were actually a sweet bread thing covered in tomatoes and onions. I happily handed mine back to one of the boys.
No matter how long you have been in Addis, there are always some things you see that make you smile. On the way home the other day, I saw a number of boys playing football, in the ring-road. I guess they thought it was a perfect place to play; it’s a flat, wide piece of ground and no one else really wants to play there. Perfect!!! I was waiting to leave in our taxi, when we saw a huge commotion going on, and everyone got out of our taxi and into another. The driver of the original taxi began fighting furiously with the driver of the new taxi, it became apparent what had happened; the other driver had stolen the guy’s keys out of the ignition so that he could steal all his passengers. Quite funny, but there was nearly a fight to the death over it!!! Fortunately, other drivers intervened and the offending driver drove away before any further damage was done.
My parents arrived on Saturday, and I picked them up from the airport and drove them back to Bingham. It is very interesting seeing the city again through the eyes of one who has just arrived; all the sites that I have got (note the non-American grammar used at the request of my parents) used to amaze and excite them, and I remember what it was like when I first arrived here. We’ve been on a few excursions and have more to come; I’ll blog all about them next time, once I get some photos.
Take care,
Niall
