Another week gone here in Addis, I’m back to my hectic schedule. Which is difficult, but I’m managing to cope so far.
Thursday of this week was, of course, Valentines Day. Brian and I decided to give all the single girls something in the way of a card, so we created a silly joke card, with pictures of us stuck on muscle men bodies. It gave them all a laugh anyway, and created quite a stir about the compound. All good fun.
At the weekend, we had another event for the Horizon boys. We had them all around to our house for a camp out. Brian borrowed the tents from Bingham. He decided to buy a sheep and to kill it and roast it over the fire for dinner. However, during the week, he decided that one of the goats, the male one, should be for the chop too. He had gotten very irritated by them; they were costing a lot to feed and were totally trashing their pen. They ate the bark off the trees, climbed on the fence, and were generally high maintenance. So he decided that enough was enough, and made the decision to sell Beyonce, and eat the other.
The boys arrived, and we set up the volleyball net for them, and they enjoyed playing in the yard. About 7pm, one of our guards did the duty of killing the goat, as well as the sheep that was also bought, and the boys and our guards began skinning and gutting the animals. They are quite adept at this, and in about an hour, they had skinned, gutted and chopped both animals into pieces ready for cooking. We had built a fire and borrowed a Metad (a large metal wok-like pan) to cook the meat over the fire. We had our house worker cook some sauces and ate everything with (what else) Injera. Apart from the weirdness of eating something that you’d seen running about an hour earlier, the meal was very nice.
They all camped out in our garden, and on Saturday we went back to the swimming pool at Debra-Zeit. All very enjoyable, the guys really love swimming, even though they can’t swim at all and have to stay in the small pool.
On Saturday evening, I went to Bingham to watch the FA cup tie between Man U and Arsenal. We managed to set up the projector, to watch it on the big screen. Really great stuff, I think most of the Champions League matches should be shown and we may also be able to watch some of the six nations’ matches when they start again. Great!
Brian has obtained a new animal from some of the Horizon boys, they had a cat that had kittens and have given one to Brian. He has named it accordingly, Beyonce has gone; Shakira is in. She is at the very cute kitten stage, I’ll enclose some pics:
Take care,
Niall
